UW–Madison Collaborates with Army to Advance in AI Field

How important is artificial intelligence? With the growth of cyber threats and security needs, AI is a recurring topic of discussion universally. The Army’s Artificial Intelligence Scholars and Artificial Intelligence Technicians program was developed to work with universities like UWMadison to answer such questions.

AI can mimic human intelligence through the use of complex algorithms. It is used in retail, manufacturing, healthcare and more. Its reach is expanding to just about all fields. In the military, AI is used to understand data and technology to make game-time decisions on the battlefield and automate other previously human-run tasks.

This year, 40 individuals graduated from the Army’s Artificial Intelligence Scholars and Artificial Intelligence Technicians program. The University of Wisconsin–Madison works with the Army Artificial Intelligence Integration Center (AI2C), which allows the Army to connect with a broader part of the AI community.

UW–Madison offers an array of AI courses for both undergraduate and graduate students, including CS 540 that’s being taught by new Department of Computer Sciences Assistant Professor Kirthevasan Kandasamy along with Fred Sala and Yingyu Liang.
