The Daily Cardinal reported on UW-Madison’s fastest growing majors – data science and computer sciences – in the article “Data science, computer science majors show biggest increase in student enrollment.”
In addition to noting the reasons behind the growth, the article also addressed the diversity of majors in regards to gender. In 2022, 17% of computer sciences majors were women. And although low, it is line with national numbers. In 2018, only 19.9% of computer science majors nationally were female.
There has been growth in regards to the diversity. Computer Sciences Chair Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau stated that “the number of women in our program currently is larger than our entire program was about 15 years ago.”
